LightMate Series

A survey found that 74% of Hong Kong people experience poor sleep quality. Many take a long time to fall asleep, wake easily during the night, and still feel tired afterwards. While stress is a common cause, lighting also plays a crucial role.

The newly launched Philips LightMate Series is designed to address this issue. By simulating natural light changes throughout the day, it helps regulate melatonin levels and restores a healthy and natural sleep rhythm.

 

 

Design Background

 

The daily rise and fall of the sun represent the natural power of daylight in regulating the body’s circadian rhythm. Daytime light boosts alertness, enhances mood, and supports clearer thinking^, while darkness encourages sleepiness*.

Modern lifestyles, however, keep people indoors for long hours and exposed to electronic devices late into the night—disrupting both sleep onset and wakefulness. Philips LightMate Series aims to solve these challenges.

Philips' Innovative LumiVital Technology — Enhancing Circadian Rhythm Regulation

LumiVital technology uses three-color LED mixing, expanding the typical color temperature range from 2700K–6500K to 2200K–10000K. This closely replicates the sun’s natural spectrum, ensuring precise simulation of sunlight.

From dawn to midday brightness, it captures the full progression of natural lighting, promoting melatonin (M‑EDI) regulation and supporting a healthy circadian rhythm.

Taking the CL951 LightMate Ceiling Light as an example, the different modes works together with LumiVital technology to balance melanopic stimulation in the user’s retina.

When using the “Sunrise Wake-up Mode,” the gradually brightening light simulates a sunrise, allowing the user to transition naturally from dreaming to waking. By increasing melatonin (M‑EDI), it helps the body awaken naturally and reduces morning grogginess.

 

When using the “Natural Sleep Mode,” the gradually dimming amber light, paired with calming breathing rhythms, helps lower M‑EDI. Whether for families with children or light‑sleeping workers, it helps relax the body and mind for a peaceful sleep.

 

Certified testing by TÜV Rheinland Germany has confirmed that the CL951 LightMate Ceiling Light effectively increases M‑EDI in “Sunrise Wake-up Mode” and decreases M‑EDI in “Natural Sleep Mode.”
